The Italian Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) was founded in 2005 as a part of the answer of International Community to the Afghan population’s request of assistance, in the more distant provinces from the Capital, in order to facilitate the activation of the Civil Society’s “vital ganglions”. Therefore, the PRT is not only a simple military tool of NATO but is a technician tool for the Afghan People as well and its representatives are elected to link all the actors committed in building a new society.

The PRT mission is to assist the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to extend its authority, in order to facilitate the development of a stable and secure environment in the identified area of operations, and enable security sector reform and reconstruction efforts.

One of the main tasks of the Italian PRT is to obtain here a sure and safe environment, where the Local Authorities could act their governance activities in order to promote the social and economic development. To do this PRT CIMIC Centre as core function of PRT, invests its energies to allow, at the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the improving of the inhabitant’s life conditions, always respecting the culture, the traditions and the religion of the Afghan People.

The PRT is composed by a military component and a civilian component of the Italian Foreign Affairs Ministry. In other words, the reconstruction efforts of the PRT are conducting in coordination between the PRT CIMIC Centre (military component) and the COOPERAZIONE ITALIANA (civilian component) in perfect symbiosis with the local Authorities. Since November 2008 SLOVENIA has joined PRT CIMIC Centre providing Functional Specialists within CIMIC Centre – Project Team.

All the PRT projects are decided by the Provincial Development Committee that analyses the requests and decide the priorities.
