CSM Mantovani was born in Lendinara, on 1953, and entered the Army, on January 1973, attending the 38th junior NCO course at the Mechanized and Armoured school. Assigned to the amphibious infantry specialty, on 1975 he qualified as assault diver at the Italian Navy Special Warfare Centre. He served within the "Serenissima" lagunari regiment/amphibious scouts platoon, until 2003, contributing to the operational requirements definition and training programs development for this high-readiness special outfit.

He has held a variety of responsibility positions at team and platoon level, operating with elements of other armed forces, in several Countries as well as on board of Italian and US Navy ships. He carried out reconnaissance and unconventional warfare activities, characterized by great operational autonomy, utilizing underwater, amphibious and airmobile techniques in different environments.

CSM Mantovani is also a graduate of the Army jump school; the International long-range reconnaissance school, Germany; the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy, Fort Bliss, TX; the peace support training centres of Canada and Greece.

He served in the amphibious battalions "Marghera" and "Sile", the "Serenissima" lagunari regiment and the Cimic Group South/Multinational Cimic Group. In some occasions, he has been employed to support police forces in contrasting terrorist groups and organized crime organizations. Besides, he served a three-year tour within the NATO Land Component Command – Madrid, Spain.

CSM Mantovani's overseas missions comprise the participation to the EC Monitor Mission to former Yugoslavia territories and to peacekeeping operations in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan.
